***Adoption Policies and Procedures for Rat-rat Rattery (R2R)***

Rat-rat Rattery as the breeder gets first pick out of all litters. This is to ensure the continuation and improvement of our lines.

We adopt out on only one or two breeding contracts a year. If the litter has babies available for breeding, approved breeders will have second pick from the litter.

Following the above, we adopt out on a first-come, first-served basis from a waiting list of potential adopters who have filled out the proper adoption application and have been approved.

ALL potential adopters must fill out the Adoption Application for Pet-Only Rats. The purpose of the application is to make sure we are able to find the best homes possible for the babies.

The Adoption Application for Breeding Rats must ALSO be filled out by potential adopters who have the intention to breed the adopted rat/rats in the future. We also require that all breeding adopters register their rats with the North American Rat Registry (NARR).

Filling out one or both of the adoption applications does not guarantee you will be approved to adopt. After your application/applications have been received, we will contact you.

When you have been approved to adopt, we will contact you again when it is time to set up reservations on a litter (this will be when babies are three weeks of age). Babies are reserved with a $5.00, non-refundable deposit which will go towards the adoption fee.

Our adoption fee is $25.00 for one rat, $40.00 for two rats, or if adopting more than two rats, the adoption fee is $15.00 per rat.

The non-refundable deposit and/or the adoption fee may be mailed via postal mail or paid through PayPal. Please email us for the correct PayPal address and/or our mailing address.

We DO NOT breed for or adopt out rats for the feeding of other animals.

We DO NOT breed for or adopt out rats to pet stores or laboratories.

We prefer to adopt out rats in same sex pairs. Exceptions are sometimes made.

Babies are ready for adoption at six weeks of age, no earlier. No exceptions.

I prefer not to adopt out rats older than 12 weeks of age. Exceptions are sometimes made.

When picking up your new babies, it is required that you sign an adoption contract.

For the protection of our colony, we prefer to set up pick-up locations away from the rattery.

References are available upon request.

We do not ship rats. No exceptions. However, we will drive up to one hour in order to help get your new rats to you. There will usually be a small fee for this in order to cover gas expenses.

The adoption of your rat includes continuous support from us, NARR registration (which may be sent to you at a later date), a copy of the adoption contract, a one year web only membership to the Society of Michigan Rat Fanciers (application must be filled out prior to or at time of adoption to receive membership), and a bag of homemade food mix.

If you have any questions or concerns, please feel free to email us at rat2rattery@sbcglobal.net. We will try to get back to you within one week, usually sooner.
